The territorial force is properly called the Territorial Army- essentially they are reservists, part-time soldiers who hold civilian jobs but who spend part of their week in military training and education. Their function is to provide a support role for the full-time professional army in cases where the bulk of the UK's armed forces are committed to a major war- for example, during the first Gulf War of 1991. Some soldiers in the regular army look down upon the Territorials as amateurs who are inferior as a military force and who don't always understand what they're doing, but nonetheless they have provided an invaluable supportive role to the regular army on several occasions over the past few decades.

The current strength of the Territorials as of 2012 is approximately 43,000.
