The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan challenges the common misconception that Palestine was "a land without people" suitable for "a people without land". The Palestinian people were the indigenous people with a rich culture and traditions of their own. In the fourth chapter "Expulsion", Tolan writes of the United Nations majority vote that partitioned Palestine into two separate states, a decision that led to war. He also writes of the UN minority report which "recommended a single state for Arabs and Jews, with a constitution respecting 'human rights and fundamental freedoms without distinction as to race, sex, language or religions". One can only speculate on this "road not taken" and whether or not it would have led to a peaceful country with justice for all.
