Timing on a 350 Chev V-8..... assuming your damper is reading correctly..... vacuum hose removed and plugged.
Starting off point is 6-8 degrees. If you put in an aftermarket cam, 10-12.
If the engine bucks the starter, your over advanced. Chevys move ahead almost effortlessly when you get it just right.

For this question to be answered you must provide the number that is above the timing chain cover. it is a 1978-1990 2 or 4 bolt main
If it came stock with a 4 barrel carb and has the large harmonic balancer, it's probably a 4 bolt main.Repost with the engine number stamped on the machined flat pad on the passenger front of block just below the front of the passenger side cylinder head.

That requires a timing light, you loosen a bolt on the distributor and turn it a little until the marks on the main pulley match a notch that you aim the timing light at.
Journal Diameter is 1.8682-1.8692 Lobe lift intake is-.2600 Exhaust is-.2733 Camshaft end play is--.004-.012 This is a 1978 350 engine, 4-bolt main makes no difference.
