after you remove the timing belt you will see the gears... the two top large gears are marked with an I on one and an E on the other. The gear on the bottom has a notch in it - all 3 gears should be turned until the notches on the gears match the notches on the block above the gears. If that does not make sense to you then contact Van Brunt motors

you dont. It is auto timed thru the camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor, You have to have the timing belt timing marks right on to get correct timing.
timing marks are 2 at twelve o'clock on cams,one at about 11:00 on crank and if you have secondary belt about 7:00. your sporatge may not have secondary "balancer belt."
4cylinder . two cams = 12:00. crankshaft 12:oo, and the other one 11:00. see 2000 sportage, i have answered it there several times.
