Well, first, it's not from 1912 and second, it's not from New Mexico. It's one of the series of State Quarters.
Because State Quarters were minted from 1999 to 2008 I assume you've seen lots of others in change. They all have the same pattern: the year at the top of the state design is the year that state was admitted to the Union, and the year at the bottom is the year the coin was actually minted. So the reason your "1912" quarter looks so new and shiny is that it was really made in 2008!
If you look to the right of Washington's wig, you should see a little P or D indicating where the coin was made, Philadelphia or Denver. If so, and you found the coin in change, it's only worth 25 cents because hundreds of millions were made.
On the off chance your coin has an S, that means it's a special proof coin minted in San Francisco. Unfortunately unless it's in its original holder, it's lost most of its value to a collector.
