Depends on which manufacturer made the M1, condition, early war, late war.
Value runs from about $700 to $900 in average shape. This applies only to military manufacture M1 Carbines- civilian aftermarket firearms are less.
Plainfield manufactured M-1 Carbines in the 60's and 70's for law enforcement agencies. The Plainfield is a commercial carbine i.e. they are not U.S. government issue, but are able to accept parts interchangeably from USGI. It's a good carbine, not the best, but a solid carbine. Depending on condition, in 2008 it's worth about $350-$500.
After WW II, Plainfield Machine Company began making a civilian version of the M1 Carbine. These may or may not have parts that will interchange with military M1 Carbines. Their value is less than the military carbines, typically about $200, depending on condition.
Way too many variables here. The M1 carbine continued to remain in manufacture well after the military contracts were up. So, overall condition, manufacturer, and whether or not it's original military or aftermarket are going to weigh heavily on the overall value. Your best bet is to have an actual hands-on appraisal done, because there really is no way to give a definite answer without knowing more than that it's an M1 carbine.
