Cuba declared independence on October10, 1868, followed by the Ten Year War. It was with the help of Teddy Roosevelt that Cuba became a Republic on May 20,1902.

Yes, the US victory over Spain gave Cuba almost instant Independence with a few US mandated provisos that did not make Cuba happy, but which they accepted as the price they had to pay for independence.
