Roman imperial expansion stated in the 4th century BC with Rome's expansion into central and southern Italy. Rome annexed the Island near Italy (Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica in 240 BC. Rome's expansion beyond Italy and its islands begun in 216 BC. Much of Rome's imperial expansion occurred during the period of the Roman Republic (590-27 BC).

Confusingly, historians often use the term Roman Empire to refer to the rule by emperors which followed the Republic in 27 BC, even though Rome already had an empire before this. Rule by emperors in the western part of the Roman Empire lasted until 476 when the last emperor of this part of the empire was deposed. This part of the empire fell under the weight of the invasions by Germanic peoples form central Europe who eventually took over all its lands except for Italy. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist until 1453.
