There is something to do in Monterey for everyone. Most people already know about the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. But what they don't know is that there are many more great places for families to visit and things to do including: hiking along the coast or in the mountains, kayaking, bicycling, a children's museum, indoor miniature Golf and batting cage, skate park, paddle boats, whale watching/scenic coastal tours and more.
Another top reason people come to Monterey is for "romance." Top things to do for couples include romantic dining (many top restaurants with ocean views), secluded hikes, picnics in the park, live theater, live music (many smaller, intimate clubs), Carmel beach bonfires, day spa's, and wine tasting in our scenic wine country. Of course, there are many great inns, B&B's and luxury hotels available to help celebrate a special occasion such as a wedding anniversary.
For the casual visitor just coming through town, there are many great attractions including our version of Fisherman's Wharf, historic Cannery Row, our new IMAX theater, scenic drives (by Asilomar, through Pebble Beach and down to Big Sur), streetside cafes, tremendous golf courses, and the unique shops in Carmel and Pacific Grove. On most weekday nights, you can find a farmer's market which gives you a chance to soak in the local color and meet some new people.
In all, you could live in Monterey for years and never do everything there is to enjoy in this area. The mild climate and the easy going pace make it a great vacation destination. And if you are traveling to San Francisco, Monterey is less than 2 hours away (and just 1 hour from San Jose).
