The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis that lasted from November 4, 1979 until January 20, 1981. Members of the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, a group of militant university students who were supported by the new Islamic regime, held 63 diplomats and three additional U.S. citizens hostage inside the American diplomatic mission in Tehran, Iran. Fifty two people, not including those who were released, were held hostage until the conclusion of the crisis. The United States attempted a rescue operation named Operation Eagle Claw. The operation failed, resulting in the deaths of five USAF Airmen and three US Marines. Some political scientists argue that the crisis was one of the primary reasons for U.S. President Jimmy Carter's defeat in the U.S. Presidential Election of 1980. The crisis reached its conclusion with the signing of the Algiers Accords. On January 20, 1981, the hostages were formally released into United States custody after spending 444 days in captivity. The release took place just minutes after Ronald Reagan was officially sworn in as president. In November of 1979 55 americans were taken hostage. They were kept for over a year.On January 20,1981 the hostages were released. It was the same day that Ronald Reagan became the 40th president of the United States.

The hostages were released the day Reagan was Inaugurated. The effort to free the hostages came about due to the US signing the Algiers Accord which guaranteed the US would not interfere with Iranian internal affairs, they removed the freeze on Iranian oil trade sanctions and money assets, both countries would end litigation, Iranian debts to the US would be paid and the property of the former Shah would be addressed as requested.
Carter's term happened at a time of turmoil in the Middle East, and his handling of these affairs are generally considered to have been his downfall. In 1978-79, Iran had a revolution, with the old Shah (king) overthrown and the new Islamic theocracy put in place which is still there to this day; the new government was openly hostile towards the US, which had supported the Shah. At the end of 1979, Iranians stormed the US embassy in Tehran, taking 50 Americans hostage. The hostage crisis lasted all through 1980 and made Carter look bad. The revolution in Iran also had the side effect of a massive increase in oil and gas prices- Iran was a major oil supplier, and suddenly stopped producing oil. The price increases harmed the US economy, and people blamed Carter for not being able to fix it. Lastly, in April 1980, Carter ordered the US military to attempt a rescue mission to free the hostages. Long story short, the attempt failed because some of the aircraft crashed on the way to the mission, killing several soldiers. The debacle further eroded public confidence in Carter, and he was defeated in the election about six months later. The hostages were freed on January 20, 1981- twenty minutes after Reagan's inauguration. The so-called "October Surprise" conspiracy theory claims that in October 1980, Reagan asked Iran to intentionally keep the hostages, to make Carter look bad. The allegations have never been definitively proven.
The major political scandal of Ronald Reagan's second term revolved around the Iran-Contra affair. It involved senior officials within Reagan's administration secretly selling weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of American hostages, and then using the proceeds from those sales to fund rebels in Nicaragua, in violation of U.S. law. Although Reagan denied knowledge of the details, the scandal severely damaged his administration's credibility.
