What is wrong when the engine doesn't start and only makes a clicking sound when turning the key or trying to jump vehicle - 1991 Ford Explorer?

Most likely it's the starter, but check it out further.
Most likely I think it is the battery is bad or a bad connection to the battery ,positive or neg. termenals or maybe both. But if the battery is down real low even if you try to jump it the bad battery might draw to much from the one you are jumping it from and still just make the clicking sound and not start. Matter of fact I bet it's not the starter and would bet mony on it! Please just check the battery first !
