the fact that he couodnt get a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon
The Methodist Church split into a northern and a southern division over the issue of slavery.
King Henry VIII established the Church of England, also known as the Anglican Church.
Personally, I think his chief adviser on this issue was Satan. Up until then he had been a defender of the Catholic faith. It was only when he wouldn't listen to lawful authority and decided that he knew best what he needed (which sounds like everyone of us when we decide to sin instead of following God) that he sought a way to break the Church in England away from the Catholic Church.

The issue was the Investiture Controversy, the question of who had the right to choose new bishops.
In the United States, the issue of same-sex marriage, bundled together with the ordination of same-sex married clergy, has caused schism in several churches, notably the Episcopalians and the Lutherans. In many other churches, most notably the Roman Catholic Church, the majority of members polled do not agree with the official church teaching on the issue.
Henry the VIII did NOT separate the Church of England from the Catholic Church, he separated the Catholic Church IN Englandfrom the rest of the Catholic Church and formed the Church OF England. Big difference, before Henry VIII there was no Church OF England, only the Catholic Church IN England. In 1534 he had Parliment issue the Act of Supremacy.from the Website :Sovereign and Pope in English Bidding Prayersbefore and after 1534J. Frank HendersonIn 1534 King Henry VIII decreed that he was not only sovereign -- the ruler -- of the country but also supreme head of the church in England. In other words, he now took the place of the pope, who had no further role to play in England. Henry's claim to supremacy was made both legally and politically, but also liturgically.
King Henry VIII wanted a divorce from Catherine Of Aragon, but the Pope wouldn't let him. So, he made his own church, the Anglican Church, and divorced Catherine. Problem solved ! However, the historical record indicates that Henry spent most of his reign challenging the authority of Rome, and that the divorce issue was just one of a series of acts that collectively split the English church from the Roman church in much the same way that the Orthodox church had split off five hundred years before.Anglican Catholic Answer!Henry wanted an annulment not a divorce, the pope after fulfilling such a request from the King of France denied Henry because Katherine's nephew, the Emperor, was the pope's jailor! Why did the Anglican Church separate from the Catholic Church? It didn't! The Pope was told by Henry that he had no right to interfere in English Church matters, because he was breaking the Canons of the Ancient Councils! The pope knew this and sulked on being reminded of his double dealing, breaking off communion with Henry, not with the Church in England! This was done some forty years after when the Bishop of Rome tried to interfere in English politics by means of a Roman Schism'[1570.] Thus causing a schism. There was not at anytime a break from the Catholic Church, the Church in England was and still is a ,'Branch,' or Particular Church within the Body of Christ, the Break was from the Papacy and that is not by any means the Catholic Church!
Henry VIII (King of England from 1509 to 1547). Henry VIII wanted a divorce from his wife, Catherine of Aragon. The Pope refused to issue an annulment, as the marriage was valid. Henry was a wee bit desperate as he had already impregnated one of his wife's ladies-in-waiting, and wanted her child to inherit the throne, which meant that he had to validly marry her, which meant that he had to divorce Catherine. To accomplish all of this, he (Henry VIII), got the British parliament to suppress the Catholic Church and Henry then proceeded to install his own Bishops in what he called the Church of England.
1) Catholics pray in Latin, whereas Henry decreed that everyone should be able to pray in their native language. He thought learning a dead language for prayer was silly. 2) Henry was already the head of state/government and when he started the Church of England he made himself the head of the church as well. This was a huge issue for a lot of devout Catholics, who believed that only the Pope could be the head of the church, as he was placed their by God. As far as many devout Catholics were concerned, it was blasphemy.
Constant conflict between the church beliefs and realities of governing made it necessary to resolve the issue of church and state. The Magna Carta put to rest the issue by separating the church from state.
