Henry VIII (King of England from 1509 to 1547). Henry VIII wanted a divorce from his wife, Catherine of Aragon. The Pope refused to issue an annulment, as the marriage was valid. Henry was a wee bit desperate as he had already impregnated one of his wife's ladies-in-waiting, and wanted her child to inherit the throne, which meant that he had to validly marry her, which meant that he had to divorce Catherine. To accomplish all of this, he (Henry VIII), got the British parliament to suppress the Catholic Church and Henry then proceeded to install his own Bishops in what he called the Church of England.

Was Martin Luther a hero or heretic?

To every protestant under the sun he was a hero, because he stood up to the big bad Catholic Church and freed the Bible from their oppressive tyranny. To a Catholic he was a fool because he threw away his salvation with both hands, left the only Church that Jesus Christ ever founded, and guaranteed, to found his own, and mutilated the Bible, further risking his eternal salvation.

Why was king Henry the 8th so powerful?

If you mean Henry VIII, there was little he did that made England more powerful. He mainly squandered the royal treasury on unsuccessful wars that left England in possession of only one French territory - Calais - and made the break with Rome that threw England's nobility into Protestant and Catholic factions. This division of religious belief was a cause of many revolts and uprisings to come in the Tudor period. Perhaps it could be said that Henry strengthened England's international position by making Protestant alliances, by marrying Anne Boleyn for example. However, by the end of Henry's reign he had little control of the nobility, as their fight which he had unwittingly caused, for England's religion, raged on.

How were luthers beliefs different from those of the Catholic church?

His teachings differed because he taught truthfully as to what was truly in the Bible.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^is completly wrongRoman Catholic AnswerI beg to differ, Martin Luther threw seven books out of the Old Testament that the Church had used for fifteen centuries, and changed the wording of St. Paul to agree with himself while making horrible remarks about St. James as it disagree with Luther's view of salvation. Martin Luther put himself, and his opinions above that of the Bible, all the Fathers of the Church, and all the Popes and Bishops for fifteen centuries.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ is completly right

What Protestant doctrine threw out the authority of the Roman Catholic Church tradition?

AnswerThe Presbyterian Church of England!AnswerOr perhaps 95 Theses against the Catholic Church, written by Martin Luther, the founder of Lutheranism. One of the main differences between the Lutheran Church and the Roman Catholic Church lies in the doctrine of forgiveness. Lutherans believe salvation and forgiveness are gifts from God that can't be earned, setting them apart from many Christian denominations. The reason Lutheranism is compared with Catholicism is that the Lutheran Church began as a reform movement within the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

What Protestant threw out the authority of Roman Catholic Church tradition?

Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation.

What Scriptures did the Catholic Church change in the Bible?

Roman Catholic AnswerYou are operating with a mistaken assumption. The Catholic Church wrote the Bible, the Catholic Church decided which books were canonical (included in the Bible), and the Catholic Church has conserved the Bible through the centuries. The only ones who changed any Scriptures in the Bible are the protestants, who, after fifteen centuries of a Bible preserved by the Catholic Church came along and threw books out of the Bible, and changed the meanings of books they would not throw out.

Did the Roman Catholic Church change Scriptures that involved hell?

.Catholic AnswerRoman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the Catholic Church .The Catholic Church did not "change" any Scriptures, the Catholic Church wrote the New Testament in the first hundred years after Our Blessed Lord's Ascension, and put it together, eliminating those books which were not inerrant, at the end of the fourth century. Since that time, the Catholic Church has zealously guarded the Scriptures and does so until this day. The only time that the Scriptures were tampered with was by protestant heretics who left the Church in the 16th century, they threw seven books out of the Old Testament, using a fictious Jewish Council that supposedly occurred two generations AFTER Our Blessed Lord's Ascension, and edited the New Testament to agree with their new doctrines.

Why did the Catholic Church oppose the reformation?

.Catholic AnswerFor the most part, they were more upset with the protestant "reformers" like Martin Luther and Henry VIII then they were with the Church. Luther and Henry were having personal problems dealing with their own sin - they had issues, and instead of confessing their sins and dealing with them, they blamed the Catholic Church In Martin Luther's case, the princes of northern Germany latched on to him and his ideas in order to separate their states from having to pay and be obedient to Rome. In Henry's case, he started his own Church to legitimatize his bastard child by marrying the woman he threw over his Queen for. In the first case the result was the "Lutheran Church", in the second case, the result was the "Anglican Church." In both cases, the people were very upset about losing their Churches, their priests, their sacraments, etc. In the first case, I would recommend The Facts About Luther by Msgr. Patrick F. O'Hare, LL.D., in the second case, I would recommend The Stripping of the Altars: Traditional Religion in England, 1400-1580, by Eamon Duffy.

Both, Westminster Cathedral is the Catholic Cathedral for the diocese and Westminster Abbey, which was stolen from the Church by Henry VIII is now an Anglican worship center..Answer. Westminster Abbey is an Anglican church, Westminster Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church. Westminster Abbey was originally a Catholic church/monastery started by the Benedictine Monks. In 1539 the Catholic monks were thrown out. In 1556 Queen Mary restored them to their rightful place. In 1556 Queen Elizabeth (who was never the true inheritor of the throne) threw the monks out again and made the abbey Protestant..

5 What effect did the Catholic Church have on Jews in Spain?

It threw them out in 1492. The Catholics had pushed the last Muslims out of Spain in January 1492. They then gave the Jews until the end of July to leave Spain.

Why did Henry VIII close down the Catholic Church?

because the pope wouldn't let him keep divorcing so he destroyed the catholic church and he built himself a new church that was runned by him. Henry didn't destroy the Catholic Church in England, he didn't do it much good and he caused it a lot of trouble! He didn't destroy it however! Neither did he ask for a divorce, it was an annulment that was wanted. He'd seen the King of France get one some time before and saw no reason why he shouldn't have one! The Trouble was, the pope was a prisoner of Katherine of Aragon's , nephew and her nephew didn't want his aunt made the laughing stock of Europe! The pope didn't appear to care much, he'd got his money! Henry was the laughing stock of Europe and in a fit of pique he and the English Church pointed out to the Pope that the ancient canons barred the papacy from intruding in to the see of another bishop! All Henry had done was take sides in a 1000 year old quarrel about authority and further more he'd taken the side of Scripture and Tradition! If anyone had hurt the Catholic Church it was the papacy's wanton disregard of the rules!!
