In ancient Rome slaves did many jobs. Some slaves were gladiators, some slaves were house slaves who cooked and cleaned. Some slaves were miners, diggers and a lot of other things that people of Rome did not want to do.
The jobs of slaves in ancient Rome were many and varied. You name it, they did it. Their responsibilities depended upon their education. Accountants, business managers, villa managers, cooks, childcare, street sweepers, rental agents, all these occupations were done by slaves.
In ancient Rome slaves were enslaved war captives. Slaves were taken to Rome as part of the war booty. Massive amounts of slaves were sold during the period of imperial conquests. It has been estimated that in the 1st century BC 30% to 40% of the population of Italy were slaves and that in the first century AD slaves were 35 to 45% of the population of Italy. When imperial expansion ended (in the 2nd century AD) the number of sold slaves greatly decreased because the number of enslaved war captives dropped. In 406 AD the slave market in Rome was flooded with slaves who were captured when the Romans defeated an attempt to invade Italy by an Ostrogoth king.
Most slaves were bought by rich landowners and worked on their large landed estates. Imperial conquest generated a lot of wealth in Italy, much of which was through the enlargement of the large landed estates and investment in agricultural production. Much of this relied on large scale use of slave labor. Thus slavery massively transformed the agricultural economy. In urban areas slaves worked as bakers, fullers, engravers, shoemakers, mule drivers, and prostitutes. Tens of thousands of slaves worked mines or quarries. Their conditions were brutal.
Many female slaves were domestic servants in the housed of the rich, who could own hundreds of slaves, including men. At least 55 jobs of household slave jobs were recorded, including barber, butler, cook, hairdresser, handmaid, wet nurse or nursery attendant, teacher, secretary, seamstress, accountant, and physician. Their condition, though inferior to that of the householders, was often better than that of many urban free poor people and they enjoyed the best living conditions among Roman slaves.
The sevus publicus (public slave) was owned by the state. Some slaves worked in temples and other buildings. Most of them were servants of the priests and public officials. The well qualified ones worked as accountants of in secretarial jobs and were allowed to earn money for their personal use. They could earn reputation and influence and were sometimes freed. During the Republic this was done by the officials or the priests. During the rule by emperors this was done by the emperor. In other Roman towns, this was done by the local council.
The Romans were in the habit of freeing their slaves. The rates of manumission were high. At one point the majority of the population of the city of Rome were freedmen or their descendants.
Slaves in ancient Rome had whatever job their master told them to do and that they were trained to do. Remember in the ancient world, everything was done by hand or "manpower" so people, both slave and free, did jobs that are done mechanically today. For example, if we have a question, we can pick up the phone and call someone to get the answer (or ask on wiki answers). the ancients, however, did not have that luxury and if they had a question it had to be written down and a slave would have to deliver it to the recipient and perhaps wait for the answer. At any rate, the slaves were extensions of their masters, and they did everything from menial tasks to responsible financial dealings.

Slavery was an institution in every ancient civilization and culture. The Romans were no exception. Slavery was an ancient fact of life. The Romans used their slaves to handle various jobs and responsibilities, freeing up the owner to do other things and to accomplish more. The Romans depended on their slaves and trusted them with their money, their children, their businesses, and their households.
Well, they mostly came from the barbaric lands that they constantly fought. And out of the barbarians, the Germanic tribes were often sent into slavery. But so were the Franks (Celtic people who lived in what is now known as France). Literally, if you weren't Roman or an enemy of Rome, you could be turned into a slave of Romen nobles.

The Roman slaved did their jobs everyday. Slaves had may duties, from scrubbing cooking pots to transacting business for their masters. It's impossible to clump them in a single group, as they had various duties and responsibilities.

The heavy use of slave labor brought about economic decline. Small farmers, who could not compete with free labor, went out of business. These former farmers were forced to make their way in the cities, increasing overcrowding. Slaves were often war captives from barbarian tribes used to independence, so slave insurrections, many that came close to immediately toppling the empire, were always a looming threat.
