The Patrician class was restricted to only making money from the land, such as massive farms and villas or buying and trading land. However, this was only a "paper restriction". Many of the upper class got around this inconvenience by surrogates. The equestrians, or wealthy middle class, were the businessmen of the empire. They were the ones who controlled trade, formed corporations, owned the docks and warehouses and sometimes fleets of ships. The lower classes made their living either by having a small shop of some kind, or hiring out their services. If they were skilled, their services were usually in demand. Even if a poor man was unskilled in any art or craft, he could always hire himself out as a laborer, especially on farms during harvest time. Although the farm owners had slaves to work the land for them, at harvest time there was always a need for more hands and it was more economical to hire a free man to work for a set period of time, than to buy and maintain a slave, whose labor would not be needed year around.
