Immediately after the war, many did go back into the homes, but they yearned for the feeling of freedom they had by being able to work if they wanted to and in the 50's there was no stopping them. This had some positive and negative effects. The positive one of course is the fact that women were not relegated to the homes if they didn't want to be, but the negative one is that since so many homes now had two incomes, salaries didn't increase as fast they normally would have. When the income was from the male of the household, they were paid enough to take care of an entire family. When it became standard practice for two people to work, the salaries didn't increase as much each year and eventually it got to a point where you average family required both spouses to work in order to pay the bills. There is a trend now in which more and more women are wishing to return to the traditional roles in the home, but because of the income situation, it is very difficult to do.
