There was a shortage of small coins and many merchants had tokens made with their business name on one side. The other side usually carried a patriotic theme. They were the same size as the Indian Cent which had been introduced a few years before the Civil War. Unlike more modern store "Good For" tokens, businesses would accept them even if they were issued by another merchant so people were willing to take them in change. Most common Civil War Tokens were a crude copy of the Indian Cent with "Not One Cent" on the reverse and are worth only a few dollars today, but some of those with advertisements can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars to a collector.
