Onions are extremely beneficial.

The only disadvantages of onions are superficial:

1. They release sulfur when cut which can cause itchy or watery eyes while preparing them

2. They have a strong scent which can cause bad breath after eating them

On the other hand they are nutrient dense and packed with vitamins, antioxidants and minerals, including vitamin C, E, iron and sulfur just to name a few.

Antioxidants protect living tissue from damage caused by free radicals in the body, the high concentration of C and E make onions a very good source of protection.

Sulfur is a part of some of the amino acids in your body and is involved in protein synthesis, as well as several enzyme reactions. It helps with the production of collagen, which is a substance that forms connective tissues, cell structure and artery walls. Additionally, it is a part of keratin, giving strength to hair, skin and nails. Onions are one of the highest natural sources of sulfur.

Onions have been used as natural treatments for hundreds of years and are known to be anti-inflammatory (helping to reduce swelling and pain), anti-diabetic (helping to regulate healthy blood sugar), anti-fungal (combating fungal growth in the body), antiviral (boosts immune system), anti-cancerous (anti oxidants block free radicals which contribute to cancer growth), diuretic (reduces trapped water and swelling), expectorant (reduces mucus blockage), etc. Onions have been recommended as treatment for everything from insomnia to anemia and the list is endless.

Onions are quite simply one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet and are considered a staple part of the human diet.

On a side note: Onions have gotten a lot of bad press for containing opium (or morphine). The reality however is that the opium in an onion is a very small trace amount; so small that it would take thousands of onions to even begin to create even a single dose that would have an effect on a human. It would also need to be extracted and prepared first, you could not eat enough volume of thousands of onions at once to ever reach the point where your body would react to an onion the way it reacts to a dosage of opium at a drug level.

I think the question's more about vapors from onion than the onion itself i.e when peeling onions, the eyes are left with a stinging effect, they also become watery & blurry. Is this dangerous?? maybe if the question' s framed this way, responses may start streaming in.

There are several advantages. Onions contain a chemical called Quercitin, which gives most of the benefits from eating them.

  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Reduce chances of blood-clots
  • Help break down blood-clots
  • Lowers triglycerides in the bloodstream
  • Helps prevent Asthma attacks
  • Treats chronic bronchitis
  • Helps treat hay fever (in fact onion chemicals are used in hay fever, cold and flu medicines)
  • Reduces the risks of Diabetes
  • Prevents Atherosclerosis
  • Reduces (but not prevents) the chance of cancer developing, particularly stomach cancer
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Poisonous to parasites which may be in the body (mostly red onions)
  • Poisonous to infectious bacteria such as E. Coli and Salmonella
  • Contains natural antibiotics and antivirals (hence used in medicines)
  • Contains Vitamin C
  • It contains chromium which helps to regulate blood sugar.
  • It is also used to reduce inflammation and healing infections
  • It also helps to reduce gastric ulcers
  • Also helps to increase the Vitamin A level.

Burnt onions contain less benefits than cooked onions. And cooked onions contain less benefits than raw onions.
