After landing with the original issue of cotton OG fatigues, US Soldiers (US Army) were issued jungle fatigues. This was rip-stop OG (Olive Green) material designed to be worn outside (not tucked into the trousers as were the original fatigues) and consisted of four pockets (two upper and two lower per side) and each pocket had tiny holes sewn into their bottoms for water to drain out.
The trousers were the same but had cargo side pockets also with sewn holes in them for water drainage and a string at the bottom of each leg to tie the bottom tight above the jungle boot. Most GIs didn't ear underware or T-shirts after awhile; the heat was to bad and they made good rags for cleaning weapons and equipment. The steel pot (M1 helmet) was the standard WWII helmet (although a newer batch was made up just for Vietnam in the late 1960s, 1 million of them-those can be identified by their very light Olive Green paint job and have a rust colored primer...factory new). US Soldiers (US Army) also wore the Baseball cap for the first time, instead of the French (Fidel Castro) cap, in OD (OG actually) of course.

Vietnamese nationalist Phan Boi Chau wrote History of the Loss of Vietnam in1905. It was read more in China and other countries than in Vietnam, and led to the use of Vietnam as an example of what was wrong with colonialism. The book revived the use of the name "Vietnam." At that time, the country was commonly called "Annam".
