Gavrilo Princip
The smoking gun in WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28th, 1914.
The Serbian government provided the weapons that the Black Hand used to attempt to assassinate Ferdinand/the gun that Princip used to kill Ferdinand.
There was no single event that started World War 1. There were many events, which over time, led to the massive breakout of World War 1.Many claim that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, done by a gang named "The Black Hand" while Ferdinand visited Serbia, started all of the chaos. However, had Germany not given Austria the blank check (which basically informed Austria of Germany's friendship in case of any wars), Russia would not have come to the aid of Serbia and entered the war. If Germany had not entered neutral Belgium (which violated an unwritten law of Europe), Great Britain and France would have not been involved. Thus, there was not one single event, but multiple events that ultimately led to the total war known as World War 1.The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of AustriaArchduke Ferdinand was assasinated.
The gun used was a 1910 Browning semi-automatic. The model number being M1910 and its serial number was 19074. The gun in question was of such a high standard and universally applicable that it remained in production long after both world wars which were subsequently started by Gavrilo Princip's successful assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The last production run ended in 1983. On a side note it is a little known fact that it should have been a grenade that took Ferdinand's life but a last minute change of route meant the assassination had to be called off. However as Gavrilo returned home he must have been astounded when the Archdukes car came into view heading down the very road he was going up and with no serious escort. Gavrilo took his chance and started a truly insidious chain of events that would shape the world we live in today.
