Depends on your location and what you use it for. I had a F350, 10w30 in the winter, and 10w40 in the summer (for the Midwest). The 30 is lighter and oil bcomes thicker when it colder so 10w40 really works the oil pump and takes a while to get "loose" enough to provide protective coverage. The summer time the oil is less thick and more runny so thicker oil the 10-40 is ok. Summers here are 90+ winters -20 and lower. I used mine for work truck and carried loads, I used synthetic as I only changed the oil twice a year, at summer and at winter, synthetics will last a little longer. Daily driver year round you may want to consider a universal oil you use all the time. If it is newer, mine was a 78, your block probably has a heater or warms up faster so oil weight or thicnkess may not matter as much to you, a good synthetic 10-40 for daily use and occasional hauling would suffice in most cases. As far as name brands, I build and work on classics, some of the more top end stuff is the worse it breaks down and looses pressure faster than some cheaper oils. I use store brand for most Chevy small blocks in Novas, Camaros, Imapalas ect . . . and they work wonders never a fault yet.
If all else fails the owner manual, or a sticker somewhere under the hood may have the suggested weight of oil to use.
