When Jamestown was settled by the 107 men who arrived in VA they settled in a poor spot. The land was swampy, the water bad, the mosquito's carried disease, and the Native Americans were not happy that they were there. Instead of getting to work and creating a settlement they built a fort and began to look for gold. The men who came didn't come to settle, but to get rich. Within the first 3 months of the 107 men who had arrived only 36 were left alive. They died of disease, and battles with the Native Americans. Recent research has shown that there was also a Spanish spy among the men in Jamestown. In 1608 400 new settlers came to Jamestown but by the summer of 1609 there were only 90 left alive.
The main problems that the early settlers of America faced were: Disease: Malaria, Smallpox, Cholera. Indian tribe attacks: King Phillips War, Roanoke Island, Jamestown Massacre or(Indian Massacre of 1622) Crop Failure: In Jamestown, the settlers arrived to late in the year to plant crops. Many early settlers of the Virginia Colony were unaccustomed to hard labor and the settlement was not producing enough to sustain themselves.
Powhatan was a Native American chief in the time period of the early 1600's in what is now Virginia. He had assembled a number of Tribes under his leadership and was involved with the British settlement of Jamestown. His Tribal members had problems with the apparent intent of the Jamestown settlers to expand their territory into Native American lands. Bloodshed was caused as the two societies fought over the land. Powhatan, later gave his power over to his brother, to continue to fight for their rights over the land they occupied long before Jamestown existed.

When the men landed to form the Jamestown colony they had problems with the native Americans in the area. They built a fort and within the first six months of the 107 who landed only 44 were still alive. This is due to a combination of disease and attacks by the local Native Americans. So, the interactions between the colonist and the Native Americans wasn't very good.
