What kind of car?
sounds like you have a problem with the ignition if if has coil packs it will do that or it could be the wires but problay the ignition is wore out . it might not look bad but the inside is gone once you put any kind of stress on it
Usually it's inside the distributor, depending on the kind of ignition used.
what kind of car? IF its fuel injected the key turns off the computer, the fuel pump, and the ignition coil
There is two different kind of ignition on the mx3 if its a RS 4cyl, its using an external coil with is easy to locate following the wire from the distributor, its located near the fuse box on the driver side. if its a GS 6cyl, its using an internal one in the distributor, so you dont have any external coil. Note : RS from 1994 or more use an internal one similar to the GS one (but cant be interchanged)
Yes, a water screw.
If it's a HEI system you probably have some kind of problem with the control module. If it's an older engine using points I'd look first at the points and condenser. The resistor is only used when the engine is running. The starter shunts full voltage to the coil during startup to provide a little extra spark. In effect the starter bypasses the resistor for you, or at least that's the plan. Verify that the starter is doing that before you spend too much effort on anything else.
Why would anyone ask how to change the coil? It s far more difficult to diagnose. If you want to change it out first go buy the part for you will be able to identify it on the engine. Once you see it look and see what kind of bolt or bolts are holding it on. Then your going to have to figure out what tools might work and look at what tools you have. The one coil wire on it will be able to be pushed off maybe with a bit of twisting, but don't pull it with much force or it will break. This should be easy to do as it is mounted on the outside of the engine wear access is good.
What kind of auto is it. Sounds like you may have an ignition switch problem.
