Whorls look quite literally like a whirlpool. It is essentially a spiral starting from the middle of the fingertip and rotating outwards.
I believe it is relatively uncommon, maybe 3rd least common of the main fingerprints (which include, among others: loops, arches, tented arches, and indented loops). But it's possible that I completely made up that last statement.
