While there were a number of dialects, the dominant language of the Aztecs was called Nahuatl; it was especially influential in much of what is today central Mexico. (Nahuatl was originally called "Mexicacopa" by the people who spoke it.) Nahuatl and other Aztec languages were ultimately displaced when the Spaniards came in the 1500s and imposed Spanish on the peoples they conquered.
