Benito Mussolini, ruler of Italy from 1922 to 1945, rose to power as a result of various factors. His own indomitable ambition was one. The weakness of the post-World War I Italian government, which sought to avoid civil war at any price, was another. The heavy-handed shock-tactics of Mussolini's "Black-Shirt" followers was yet another.

Benito Mussolini was the leader of Italy during World War II. The fascist dictator came to power after he served in the military in World War I. He wanted to unite the country and create a political system that was much the opposite of socialism.
