The most important difference that many of the smaller differences sprang from were our government and economic systems. The United States was, and still is, a democratic republic with a capitalist economy. The Soviet Union had a communist government and a socialist economy. Both countries viewed the other's system as a threat.
The arms race came back up between countries, except this time it was a nuclear arms race, and in order to try to stop, or at least slow down the race so that there was no World War 3, SALT (the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) was created to do just that--slow down the nuclear arms race.
Only the coming down of the Berlin Wall in 1989; that was the beginning of the end of the cold war.
The only US Military campaigns conducted in the 80s were:
1. Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada 1983)
2. Operation Just Cause (Panama 1989)
3. Operations in the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War
And none of those campaigns concerned the cold war.
The Cold War was between the Soviet Union and Western democracies.
