The first humans originated in Africa. However, humans didn't stay put in one place and began to migrate. The first civilization was that of Sumer in Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq. The development of agriculture led to permanent civilizations (instead of hunter-gatherer societies) and was mainly supported by rivers. The rivers, in the case of the Sumerians, were the Tigris and the Euphrates.
