∙ 13y agoConstantinople was the administrative capital of the Roman Empire established by Emperor Constantine the Great.
After the collapse of the West Roman Empire, dated 476, the East Roman Empire survived more or less intact and continued to operate with Constantinople as its capital.
It was a center of learning, with schools and a very famous library for nearly a thousand years after that, and was a cultural center that was unmatched by any other Christian city for much of that time.

∙ 10y agoConstantine moved the capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire from Nicomedia to the nearby Constantinople which was only 69 miles away. The two cities were at the opposite ends of the Sea of Marmara which separates Europe and Asia and therefore geographically they had similar advantages. They both were on the route from Europe to Asia and the route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Constantinople had the advantage that it was on the actual strait which separates the two continents, the Bosphorus.
The location of Constantinople was easy to defend. It was surrounded by water on three sides because it was on a promontory onto the strait. On the northern there was an inlet, the Golden Horn, which stretched which the shore further inland and provided a safe harbour. The area also had seven hills, which made fortifying the city easier.
