Supposedly superior engineering which in BMW and the VAGs case give reliability. You may or may not be aware that the Z3 is an American and not German manufactured vehicle. Well, not exactly. The reason that they are more expensive is because they constantly change the way they build cars, the technology, and the fact that they are all in some kind of expensive racing program which in turn produces more functional and pleasing cars in the way they handle, feel, and look. If they made cars say like the big three, where each model has parts and designs that are off the shelf, then yes they would be a whole lot cheaper. There is no such thing as a reliable machine, it's a machine and it will have some sort of flaw. Every manufacturer has to deal with their own, and all of them posses problems of their own.
