The main ingredients in a sharpie marker are propanol, butanol, diacetone alcohol and different dye coloring. Resin, a glue-like polymer, ink that makes the ink stay on the paper. If it was only just colorant, a pigment or dye that gives ink its color ,and solvent, a liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances the colorant would turn to dust and fall of the paper as soon as the solvent dried or evaporated. A marker is defined as permanent if it sticks to most surfaces, is water resistant, or uses dye or pigment. The length of time permanent marker marks will last varies based on exposure and poorness of the surface. With heavy or outdoor exposure on a nonporous surface, marks will be heavily faded in three to four months. With limited exposure on a porous surface such as paper, marks will probably last several years. Permanent markers are made to be water resistant and they contain xylene and toluene. Permanent markers are "permanent" because they have a special chemical in them so they can dry faster.
