it is bolted to the side of the distributor
tfi module on distributer fail.
Check the TFI module. It is located on the distributor.
The coolant sensor is on top of the engine. It is between the ignition coil and the tfi module.
Thick film IV ignition system. Attached to the outside of distributor
This is a common problem with the TFI Module overheating on Fords where the Module is mounted on the Distributor. Ford has extended the warranty on these vehicles for the TFI Module to 100,000 miles. I suggest you read this and then contact your local Ford Dealer for repair if you have less than 100,000 miles. http://www.autosafety.org/article.php?did=1216&scid=185
Most likely it is the TFI module mounted on the back side of the distributor. Takes a special tool to remove it, available at auto zone for about 5 bucks.
I'm chasing the same thing on a 2.9 out of a broncoII. I have it in a suzuki samurai and it will not advance. It rattles under acceleration and is sluggish. As I understand the advance curve is controlled by the computer (eec-IV). The advance is controled by the SPOUT output from the TFI module on the side of the distributor. Your tach or REV counter may have also failed, also up gear chances on auto can be jerky. Things to check are in particular order:- 1. Hall GAP sensor inside the distributor. 2. TFI module. 3. Wiring from the TFI module to ECC. 4. The ECC. Its very unlightly to be the ECC, I would start by putting a pin into the spout wire need the distributor end. This allows you to connect a multi meter to wire without disconnecting it from the TFI. OK, Engine running:- Measure the output is should be a pulse signal, so if you have a Hz setting on you multi meter use it. Otherwise it will results if a DC voltage which should increase as the engine revs. This signal is what your ecc needs to measure the speed of the engine, and so advance the spark. If you get no signal at this point check the TFI module or hall gap sensor. If you do get a signal at this points its the wiring to the ecc or the ecc at fault. Just for your information:- SPOUT signal comes from the stator passing the hall gap sensor in the distributor onto the TFI module and then onto the ECC. PIP signal comes back from ECC into the TFI and then onto the coil to fire. This should get you going , Nick.
Module is mounted on the left side of the firewall, near the top. It should be a little flat (TFI) gray module mounted in a finned heat sink. Ford moved them off the distributor to reduce heat damage.
low on oil,
The duration of TFI Friday is 3600.0 seconds.
check the 3 or 4 pin for 12v power.if no power is shown it is faulty.avoid pin 1.2.5.6 ..this is what I was told...its not gods word
