Sweet is one of the four flavors that we can sense with our tongue, also known as gustation. When a food that has sugar in it comes in contact with out taste buds, tiny chemoreceptors in our gustatory organs become excited and send an impulse to our brain. After being transmitted through our limbic system and the thalamus, it is sent to the appropriate place in our sensory lobe, called the parietal cortex. It is here that we finally perceive it as a sweet taste.
