It was a unit composed of European immigrants who deserted or defected from the US Army during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). They are unique in the sense that they showed sympathy for the Mexican cause, and were a formidable fighting force which is considered the single unit which caused most casualties to the American side during the war. After being defeated due to sheer numbers (8,500 Americans vs. 3,800 Mexicans) and lack of ammunition during the Battle of Churubusco (August 20, 1847), most of them were executed. Nowadays, they are considered heroes in Mexico.
The Battle of San Patricio was a battle fought on February 27, 1836, between the troops of Republic of Mexico and the rebelling Mexican state of Texas.
Justinian San Vitale's church is unique because of its octagonal shape.
The "Mormon Battalion" was not under direction of the LDS church. The battalion was a group of LDS men who had been conscripted into service by the US military to fight in the Mexican-American war. They did not serve the church or other church-members in any direct way. They were marched south to the war, but got there too late. They were reunited with their families a few years later without ever firing a shot. Along the way they helped the US army establish important settlements (e.g. San Diego, CA).
