Ashoka was an Indian Emperor in the 3rd century AD. He was converted to Buddhism, and spent much of his life having shrines and monasteries built. He also had missionaries travel all over the world.
Asoka carved inscriptions called edicts on rocks and pillars and put them up in public places . The edicts were mostly written in Prakrit language so that common people can understand it.Missonaries were sent to foreign lands like Greece, syria, central Asia and Sri Lanka which spread Buddhism beyond the borders of India.
During his time buddhism had already been spread. Ashoka was the King of India during the Mauya Empire.Ashoka at frist was a ruler that wanted as much land as he could get,His kingdom was in Bangladesh to Afganistan. He then during a battle watch the Horror of his was and turned to Buddhism. He didn't out law other religons in India, it just became a buddhist country. He changed the laws during this time.He outlawed murder of humans and animals, but would let you pay to hunt if you ate meat.He didn't charge any more tax,He give back to the people with statues and other things. Most of the statues still stand today with his seal on it.Ashoka just became a great leader in his time.He converted to buddhism, but never forced it on anyone. Hope this helps, you can find movies and books on him."He is still a legend India."
