What Kenned meant when he said, "And so my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country," was he wanted to inform that he was going to do alot for the country, but he needed everyones help. He was trying to say that the country coudn't do it without him and the people. Everyone needed to work together to accomplish facing the nation's challenges with determination,l which President Kennedy promised.

∙ 7y agoThe Inaugural Address of John F. Kennedy (Jan. 20, 1961) is considered one of the greatest speeches in twentieth-century. It ranks as iconic for his eloquence and call to duty to all ordinary American citizens. Its most famous line is:
"Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country."
This was during the Cold War, and just after a bitter election campaign. People were scared of the future and disappointed with their countries' leaders. Kennedy's words called citizens to embrace "doing for others", including our country.
US Citizens tried to "live up" to this call to action. Many young people joined the Peace Corps to "give back" to their country. Others volunteered with the sick and infirm in institutions.
Other actions today might include:
- volunteering at polling centers on Election Day
- attending City Council meetings and being involved with local politics
- striving to keep National Parks clean
- recycling our country's resources
- volunteering for Big Brothers-Big Sisters
- collecting toys for needy children
- organizing food drives for veterans

- beginning a grass root effort to improve blighted neighborhoods
- Reading and learning US history so you know what civil service means as volunteers
