What might be preventing the Auto Headlamp feature from working on 1998 Jaguar XJ8 after replacing broken interior rear mirrow which has light sensor with a factory supplied replacement?

The ignition switch must be in position "ll" for automatic operation. The rotary collar on the "blinker" arm has four positions. A-off. B-Sidelights on. C-Headlamps on. D-Auto headlamps on. The rotary collar must be in the last, or fourth position for the auto feature to work. When the outside light fades to a certain pre-determined level the sidelights and and head lamps will come on after a short delay. The sensitivity level can be adjusted by turning the little control knob on the back of the mirror counter clockwise to lessen sensitivity or clockwise to increase! Keeping windshield really clean and not blocking the sensors with junk hanging from rearview mirror couldn't hurt either. Good luck.
