Best lubricant for an air-cooled engine is a synthetic multi-vis oil such as a Mobil 1 or other synthetic blend with a viscosity of 10w-30 or higher. I am using a Castrol Synthetic Blend of 10w-40 viscosity. The multi-vis oils provide superior cold engine start-up lubrication and the synthetic properties help prevent oil breakdown when it gets hotter on summer days under load. Never had a failure. If you're on a budget, use the store brand 10w-30 standard gas engine motor oil. The oil gets changed every 50 hours of use or once a summer for light duty yards. Hope this helps!

A typical riding mower with a 38" deck probably comes with a 12.5HP motor. If your mowing requires cutting higher grass or big hills you may want to have one with a larger engine more like a 16.5HP.
