A Volkswagen Golf Mark 3 N Reg should take 15w40 oil if the oil is mineral. If synthetic oil is preferred, a weight of 10w40 is fine.

Put enough in to reach the full mark on the dipstick. If the oil light is on you either have a leak or the engine is burning oil.

Park on level surface. Drain oil and change filter. Add 4 quarts of the correct weight oil and then start engine and let run for 1 minute. Shut off and wait 30 minutes. Check oil level and add as necessary to reach the full mark. You now know the capacity.

If you put it in the gas just empty the tank and put new fuel in it. If you put it in the oil reservoir drain oil and put new 4 cyc. oil in let warm up then change it again it should be OK.
On my 2006 Golf, when opening the bonnet, there's a metal piece inscribed on the chassis right in front of the radiator stating exactly what oil to put in (20W 50). If not there, try reading it up in your instruction manual ;)
There should be a cap on the top of 1 of the valve covers, remove it and put oil in there.
