I'm assuming you are referring to World War II. I only have anecdotal information so take it as it is.
Based on what my Grandparents have told me (living in Germany), women were required to take many positions traditionally occupied by men. At the time, this meant just about everything from delivering the Post, harvesting crops, making weapons and household items etc. I assume this was similar in allied countries where many men were killed, not just in Europe.
After the war, many women felt like their role in society had become more substantial, and were reluctant to return to their submissive roles as assistants and housewives. This empowerment really fueled the feminist movement (again), and was incredibly valuable as it demonstrated the ability of women to take jobs that were previously thought to be "men's work".

Igbo Women's War happened in 1929.
Women had diverse perspectives on the war during World War 1. Some women felt that the war efforts were unjustified and they refused to help in the war efforts. Other women wanted to show support in every way possible.
The war increased opportunity for women
The primary occupations of women before World War 1 were teaching and nursing. Of course, there were exceptions to this, but the war did create the opportunity for women to work in factories and other jobs that had typically been held by men.

World War 1 was a pivotal time period for women. It gave women the opportunity to prove themselves in a male- dominated society, doing more than cleaning houses and tending children. With so many men at war, there was a large gap in employment and in response, women came in to replace them!

The reason why so many women were working during the war was because all of the men were fighting in the war. Many women helped the war by becoming nurses, but still, some had to remain at home working and keep up their family's business.
