According to his writings, it was a combination of things. Barack Obama had taken a job as a community organizer and an advocate for the poor in Chicago during the mid-1980s. The more he did advocacy work, he came to the conclusion that poor people needed greater access to legal advice; so he went to law school and got his law degree in 1991. But while he seems to have felt positively about being a civil rights attorney (and a law professor), he still felt that his work was not making enough of a difference. He came to believe the people who had the power to make changes in society were serving in politics, and so, in 1996, he decided to run for the Illinois state senate.
