The word 'Hickory' is derived from the Powhatan language of Virginia which is a North American Indian word 'Pawcohiccora', trees in the genus carya. The genus includes about 17-19 species of deciduous trees with pinnately compound leaves and big nuts. About 5-6 species are native to India and China, 11-12 are from US, 4 from Mexico and about 2-4 are found in Canada.
