I have a mini. They are not recognized by the AKC, but that does not mean they don't exist. The breeds started years ago by breeding small Australian shepherds.

As long as you know that the dogs are from good sources and their breeders have a good reputation and can supply you with information about their parents and other dogs and all is good you shouldn't have a problem.

An Aussie that is mostly white may be a homozygous merle, also called a double merle. This means that both parents carried the merle gene. It may sound innocent enough, but double merle Aussies can be blind and/or deaf or have vision and hearing difficulties. Breeders who breed two merles together are not scrupulous breeders and aren't the sort of person you'd want to buy a puppy from. If you are interested in getting a double merle Aussie, rescues are a great place to look. Most people don't want these white Aussies because they may be deaf or blind, but they still make great pets and still need homes like any other dog. They act like any other dog, they just may need some extra care and consideration.
