There are several things that can cause the hubs to fail to engage. The root cause in my opinion is a poor mechanical design. The slightest vacuum leak can cause hubs to not engage. Your vacuum canister may also have water in it or adjacent rubber vacuum lines may be cracked. The grease on the wheel axles may have stiffened or hardened causing hubs to not engage even with proper vacuum. You will continue to have problems with the so-called automatic vacuum hubs until you replace them with WARN Manual hubs. It's a half hour job and only a few tools are required - 10mm socket and screwdriver. If you are bit handy, you can use a dremmel tool to carefully remove the center portion of the chrome plastic wheel caps so that they fit over the Warn hubs making a nice clean looking job to complete your permanent fix. The WARN hubs can be purchased off Ebay for apx. $120. Money well spent. You will have to manually engage the hubs after you install them by getting out the vehicle to rotate the hub engage mechanisms on each wheel, but very minor inconvienence in my opinion. When you are ready to return to two wheel drive, simply stop the vehicle, get out and return the hub mechanisms to their disengaged position and put the 4 wheel shift lever back in 2WD position. I have had three 4x4 Kias since 1998 and have replaced the vacuum hubs on all of them due to almost predictable annual failure! Hope this helps.

Your transfer caseon your 1989 jeep grand wagoneer will not engage?

If the shift lever on the floor won't move to engage there is most likely a linkage problem. If the linkage seems to move and you shift the lever under the dash from 2wd to 4wd and the transfer case does not engage look for a vacuum problem. the lines can be very brittle and break easily. There is a vacuum motor on the transfer case that must work in order to engage the 4wd. if all of these seem to work then the problem is likely to be internal.

Why won't your 4x4 engage in your 2002 Sportage the engage light comes on but only the back wheel spins?

Your hubs are probably bad. The vacuum hubs are known to cause problems. Replace with Warn hubs. Before replacing hubs, check vacuum lines TO THE HUBS, no tears or breaks allowed ,this fixed mine, rubber hose is cheaper.....upland

Why won't the 4 wheel drive engage on my 2000 kia sportage?

The 4wd is vacuum actuated. Check the vacuum lines and the switch (located on the driver's side of the engine compartment on the 1999). I've also heard the grease that allows the 4wd clutch to engage can gel up as it gets older. Otherwise, you may have to replace the hubs with manual ones.

98 expedition 4x4 light wont come on or engage?

Where is your vacuum hose on your 1998 KIA Sportage 2WD?

The Kia Sportage has more than one vacuum hose. There are many all over the engine bay as well as under the dash of the vehicle.

Why won't 4 wheel drive won't engage on 2002 kia sportage?

My Sportage is a 2001 model but I also had trouble initially getting it into 4wd. The trick is to shift it when the clutch is engaged and you are moving. It goes easily from 2wd to 4wd and back again like this, but if you try to shift it while stopped and with the clutch pedal depressed, it won't go. If the shifter moves, but 4wd still won't engage, the problem is probably with the automatic locking hubs. These are activated by vacuum lines that are prone to breaking. Check that there is no leak at the vacuum solenoid (just forward of the master brake cylinder in the engine compartment), and then check the lines in the wheel wells. Replace any broken or defective lines. If 4wd still doesn't work, the problem may be with the automatic locking hubs themselves. These can be replaced with either replacement automatic hubs or manual hubs. Automatic hubs will restore shift on the fly capability, but the manual hubs are cheaper and more reliable because they don't rely on vacuum lines. You will however have to stop the vehicle and manually set the hubs every time you select 4wd. Good luck.

How do I get my 1994 Chevy blazer's 4whl dr button to function?

If the button is not working, might be a vacuum line problem. Vacuum lines engage the 4x4, might need to check the lines to the 4x4 transfer case.
