Low of coolant, defective water pump, clogged radiator interior or exterior, cooling fans not working, thermostat installed up side down, or you may have bought a bad, new, thermostat. It happens. Also running 100% water will cause it to overheat. Run a 50/50 mix.
Follow the top radiator hose to where it connects to the motor. In this housing, is the thermostat.
Drain the radiator. Remove the lower radiator hose from the motor. Unbolt the hose inlet, and remove the thermostat. Replace the thermostat and the inlet, the hose, and refill the radiator.
The thermostat is located on the front left of the motor facing the radiator(Almost directly below the radiator cap). The lower radiator hose is attached to the thermostat housing.

The thermostat on a 1998 Isuzu Trooper is located on the front of the motor. It is in the top radiator hose where it connects to the motor. To access the thermostat, the hose needs to be disconnected from the motor.
Locate the radiator. Locate the upper radiator hose. Follow it to where it connects to the motor. That's where your thermostat is. In the little housing that your upper radiator hose connects to.
Almost all thermostats are located at the motor where the top radiator hose connects to the motor. Drain the coolant, remove the 2 bolts in the thermostat housing, replace the thermostat, and replace the housing and refill the radiator.
Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to where it is attached on the motor. It is attached to the thermostat housing wich is held on by two bolts. The thermostat is under this housing.
Follow the top radiator hose, to where it joins the motor. Inside of that housing, is the thermostat.
