When you turn the key of your car,a signal is sent to the starter solenoid via cable. Now the starter solenoid draws power from battery and gives it to the starter motor which has a retractable gear attached to it.

The motor starts and the gear messes with the flywheel to turn the crankshaft. The pistons attached to the crankshaft now draws air-fuel mixture (in case of petrol engine) and as soon as enough mixture is sucked, the battery operated spark-plug makes a spark and combustion starts. During the process the flywheel gets enough momentum to continue on its own, the gear retracts and the cycle goes on...

This is the answer true to my best knowledge, hope it satisfies you.

The ignition lock has several positions; Off/locked, off, accessory, on, and start. The start position is what is called a 'momentary' switch, in that it will not stay in that position. When holding the key in the 'start' position, the battery sends current to the solenoid, which switches the current to the starter motor. When the starter motor is energized, the solenoid pushes the gear on the starter motor shaft forward to engage the ring gear on the flywheel of the engine, allowing the starter motor to turn the crankshaft. On Ford vehicles, the solenoid only switches the current to the starter motor, and the motor spinning throws a gear forward to engage the ring gear. In either case, turning the key energizes the starter motor, which turns the engine over.

Engines are started by making the crankshaft turn and causing the pistons to move. The sparkplugs are firing during this process and the initial few explosions in the chambers start the engine. In lawnmowers this is done by pulling a start cord that starts the engine turning. In old films you may have seen cars being started using a hand crank or biplanes being started by someone turning the propeller by hand. Older motorcycles ( and some newer ones ) have a kick starter. Most vehicles today employ a starter motor wich is simply an electric motor with a bendix spring and a small gear that jumps out and turns a flywheel. The flywheel is attached to the crankshaft at the rear of the engine and turns when the starter is engaged. Compression starting is a tactic employed by those with a manual transmission and a failed starter. The car or motorcycle is pushed, prefferably downhill, and the driver pops the transmission into low gear with the key on. The driver then quckly depresses the clutch and the engine starts.

There are many things that happen to make one start from furnishing power to the starter to feeding the spark and fuel at the proper times to make it happen.

if you leave a light on for a while (depends how good the battery is. if the battery is strong and good enough then it can sometimes burn a whole night and then still start the car)
