Four presidents were members of the United States Whig Party:
William Henry Harrison (1841)
John Tyler (1841-1845)
Zachary Taylor (1849-1850)
Millard Fillmore (1850-1853)
Whig presidents have governed for 8 years in total.
The above is true, but fails to note that the Whig Party was actually one of the two dominant parties in the elections above (the other party was the Democrat-Republican Party, the predecessor to the current-day Democratic Party).
Realistically speaking, no President has been elected from a 3rd party - that is, the President has always come from one of the two dominant parties of the time period.
minor, or third, parties appear from time to time. although no third-party candidate has ever been elected president, minor parties do affect election outcomes. they take votes from major parties and they call attention to certain issues.
There has never been any true third party candidates that have been elected to presidential office. The two main parties are the democrats and the republicans.
