Which president in office borrowed money from China first?

The US does not specifically borrow from China. What happens is that after approval by Congress, the Treasury Department offers bonds for sale and foreigners are allowed to buy them if they wish. They are sold at auction. The president has nothing to do with who buys the bonds. Bonds can also be resold and transferred to new owners. Therefore, it is hard to know who owns them or when the first Chinese national bought a US bond. However, it is known that until 1972 or so, foreigners owned less that 5% of US treasury bonds, so Nixon would be a reasonable guess as the first president who started "borrowing" from China.

How much in US Treasury bonds is owned by the Chinese government?

To get up to date figures of straight from the mouth of the fox guarding the hen house: MAJOR FOREIGN HOLDERS OF TREASURY SECURITIES http://www.ustreas.gov/tic/mfh.txt As of Feb 2010 China, Mainland owns 877.5 Billion dollars in Treasury securities. Also, Try these sites: http://www.ustreas.gov/tic http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/BPDLogin?application=np Peter Schiff talks quite a bit about treasury bonds, and how when China (the country that has the most US Treasuries) stops buying up US Bonds, the American Government will be less able to summon trillions of dollars to give to things like the military, healthcare, US Pension system, food subsidies, space, infrastructure, as well as internal government operations themselves. Once foreign holders of treasury securities get spooked that the full faith and trust of the US treasury is suspect (has a risk of being unable to pay back the interest rates on the bonds), the US Fiat currency will collapse and return to its intrinsic value, which is the worth of the green paper and the ink on it. US Dollar becomes confederate money, a new Dollar is created, and all debts are cancelled, it has happened before, and it will happen again.

Why is Treasurys spelled this way and not Treasuries?

The plural of treasury is treasuries, and not treasurys. You may have seen treasury's, and didn't notice the apostrophe. Apostrophe s ['s] usually indicates possessive. In this case, it would mean "something held or owned by a treasury". "The nation possesses a lot of gold, but its treasury's art holdings are even more valuable." [Just to be sure it's clear-- in this sentence there is one treasury. It has some art holdings.]Actually, the Wall Street Journal has been spelling it treasurys when they refer to multiple bonds for years. I wrote them about it but they continue with the incorrect spelling.
