Until the last decade of the twentieth century, Irish religious patterns were exceptional for Western Europe. The extremely high levels of Roman Catholic belief and practice were thought to be a way of asserting national identity in the face of British Imperialism. The twenty-first century has begun to see some interesting changes in religious beliefs and attitude to issues at the core of religious teachings.

In the 2008 census, about 96 per cent of the adult population of the Republic of Ireland identified as Christians but belief in God, with no or some doubts, has dropped from 86 per cent in 1991 to just 70 per cent in 2008.

In the 2011 census, 91 per cent of the adult population of the Republic of Ireland identified as Christians.

A poll in 2012 found that 10 per cent of the population now consider themselves convinced atheists, so that with a small percentage of Muslims, Jews, other religions and agnostics, the number of Christians had fallen somewhere below 89 per cent.
