In 2012 (December 2011), the total population of the United States was 312.8 million. At that time, the reported Catholic population according to the Official Catholic Directory was 66.3 million with the self-identified (polled) Catholics as 78.2 million, for roughly a 25% or a quarter of the United States population reporting as Catholic. By the way, it's just Catholic, there is no such thing as "Roman Catholic", that is a left-over slur from the protestant revolt in England.
